MEALS

  • Your adventure begins in Tbilisi, but today is not about sightseeing—it is about orientation and preparation. After arriving at the airport, you are met by your driver-guide and transferred to your hotel in the city. Once checked in, a guided walk introduces you to the capital’s layout and rhythm. You pass through Freedom Square and along Rustaveli Avenue, where historic theaters, government buildings, and cafés define modern Georgia. This walk is deliberately paced, helping your body recover from travel while beginning light movement. Later in the evening, the focus shifts to logistics and readiness. Time is set aside for currency exchange, gear checks, and last-minute purchases such as gloves, snacks, or weather layers. Your guide conducts a detailed briefing covering altitude changes, weather conditions, road realities, and physical expectations for the coming days. This is the calm before the mountains.

  • Today blends history with intentional physical movement. The exploration begins at Metekhi Church, overlooking the river valley where the city was born. From here, the route moves entirely on foot through Old Tbilisi’s uneven streets—stone paths, stairways, and sloping lanes that gradually work the legs. The walk leads into Abanotubani Sulphur Baths, where domed rooftops steam year-round, followed by a cable-car ascent to Narikala Fortress. From the fortress walls, the city spreads out below—river bends, rooftops, and distant hills. The descent is made on foot, using hillside trails and staircases rather than transport. This downhill walk conditions balance and knees—an intentional preparation for mountain terrain later in the week. The day concludes near the river and Peace Bridge, with time to rest and refuel. Evening briefing focuses on the next day’s altitude gain.

  • Departure is early. The city fades quickly as the vehicle enters the Georgian Military Highway, a legendary route carved through valleys and gorges. The first major stop is the Zhinvali Reservoir, where still blue water contrasts sharply with rugged hills. Soon after, you explore Ananuri Fortress, climbing its stone towers and walking along ramparts overlooking the reservoir. This is your first real taste of medieval mountain defense architecture. As the road climbs, forest gives way to open slopes. Air thins, temperatures drop, and views widen. Arrival in Gudauri places you above 2,000 meters. After check-in, time is reserved for acclimatization walks around ridgelines and panoramic viewpoints. Sunset often brings dramatic light across the peaks. Early night is encouraged—tomorrow goes higher.

  • This is a high-altitude day, both visually and physically. Leaving Gudauri, the route crosses the Jvari Pass, where weather can shift within minutes. A stop at the Gudauri Friendship Monument offers vast views into the Devil’s Gorge—wind, scale, and silence dominate the experience. By midday, the journey reaches Kazbegi. From the village, the ascent toward Gergeti Trinity Church begins via 4x4 and then on foot. The climb is steady and deliberate, with pauses to absorb the scale of the Caucasus—towering slopes, glacial streams, and Mount Kazbek looming in the distance. At the church, time is unhurried. This is not a photo stop—it is a moment of stillness earned by ascent. The descent brings you back to Kazbegi village, where the evening is quiet, reflective, and deeply grounded in the mountains.

  • This is the longest and most demanding travel day of the expedition. Departure is before sunrise. Roads twist through valleys, highlands, and remote settlements as you traverse the country westward toward Svaneti. As you approach Mestia, landscapes become sharper and more isolated. Stone towers appear—structures built for defense, family survival, and clan identity. After check-in, a guided walk through Mestia introduces these towers, local churches, and museums that explain Svan culture, warfare, and resilience. The air here feels different—colder, thinner, and quieter. Evenings in Mestia are calm; the mountains dominate everything.

  • Today is the heart of the adventure. Travel by 4x4 deeper into Svaneti, following rough mountain tracks toward Ushguli, a UNESCO-listed settlement beneath Mount Shkhara. Walk through clusters of medieval stone towers, cross glacial rivers, and move through landscapes that feel untouched by modern life. The altitude, isolation, and raw terrain make this day physically and mentally immersive. Time is spent walking between villages, photographing glaciers, and understanding how life survives here year-round. Return to Mestia by evening—tired, fulfilled, and aware that few travelers reach this deep into the Caucasus.

  • After breakfast, begin the return journey toward Tbilisi (via domestic flight or road, depending on conditions). As altitude decreases, forests reappear, temperatures rise, and the intensity of the mountains slowly releases its grip. Transfer to the airport for departure, concluding a journey that was earned mile by mile, not consumed.
